Pendant Lighting for a Contemporary Feel
Pendant Lighting for a Contemporary Feel
Pendant lights are ideal for transforming any area in your home into a modern sanctuary. They can go anywhere due to their relatively small size and multitude of styles and designs. Pendants are perfect for bringing a distinctly urban sensibility to a variety of rooms and spaces. Their designs range from minimalist to ornate, while they offer a suitable substitute for more traditional ceiling fixtures.
What exactly are pendant lights? They typically consist of a single bulb housed in a shade and suspended from the ceiling with a rod or cord. The variety mainly comes in the design of the shade. Shades for pendant lights range from the very contemporary (such as metal or asymmetrical glass designs) to the traditional (such as stained glass). Sizes are also varied, as most pendants feature standard wattage bulbs with matching shades while others feature much larger shades made to accommodate larger bulbs. Smaller pendants benefit from several features, however. First, their size makes them easy to place in a number of places. Second, this small size further adds to their appeal by allowing several pendants to be placed in a line. This design is an alternative to a three or four light ceiling fixture. Several pendant lights placed evenly apart can offer the same level of luminescence as another fixture but with the added bonus of a unified design scheme.
Where are the best places to hang pendant lights? Pendants are very popular for kitchen lighting. Many homes feature several above an island, with others over countertops or breakfast areas. Pendants are also great for bathroom lighting as a way to modernize. A larger bathroom is ideal for placement of pendant lights. A counter sink or dressing area, for example, can be complemented with a hanging pendant. Outdoor lighting is another area great for pendants. A patio or porch will look great with a hanging lantern-style pendant. This can help set a mood of tranquility ideal for barbecues or meditation. Hallways are another often overlooked area suitable for pendant lights. Portraits or works of art along the walls of a narrow hallway can be embellished and made a focus point with the help of a pendant light.
There are many styles of Pendant lighting to choose from. Try using pendant lights to modernize existing design schemes for outdoor lighting or bathroom lighting.
