Kitchen Lighting

All too often, the way that we choose to light our homes isn’t given more than a second glance. When installing the lighting fixtures in a home, most building contractors are happy to install the requisite over head light or ceiling fan smack in the center of the room without really stopping to think if that fixture and placement are really right for the most enjoyable atmosphere in the room.

While there are a variety of different ways that you can choose to light a kitchen, such as new kitchen pendant lights and new kitchen island lights. Realize that different lighting styles produce different layers of light is important to the overall success of the room.

Before you can come up with kitchen ideas that will provide the room with multiple layers of illumination, it is important to know the differences that exist between direct and indirect sources of light.

Direct lighting refers to light fixtures that are affixed directly above the surface that they are intended to illuminate, and is often achieved by installing conventional recessed lights, pendant lights, fixtures that hang from a chain, or surface lights. These lights are useful for providing bright, general light in a room, but can also be the cause of shadows and dim light if the right placement or bulbs aren’t used.

Indirect lighting is achieved when the source of the light, such as the bulb, is placed outside of the view of the room’s inhabitants. When installed correctly, indirect lighting fixtures illuminate and send the light rays bouncing off of walls and ceiling, which creates a pleasing glow that helps to elevate the feel of the entire room.

It’s very popular to put lighting strips or fixtures on top of cabinets where they will send the most light up toward the ceiling.

You have many options when choosing the right lighting for your kitchen.
