CHANGING LIGHT FIXTURES SAFELY

One part of home improvement is how to change a light fixture. Although this is a relatively simple process, there are a few important tips to keep in mind. You can make the process of changing light fixtures much easier, and also safer for you.

An essential part of safety is making sure you purchase the correct size. Depending upon the particular type of light fixture you are buying, and whether you are replacing an old one or installing something new, you need to know that it will fit properly. This means you need to measure the space where you plan to locate it so that the light fixture will not come in contact with the wall or cabinets; and, if you are replacing an existing light fixture, be sure that the size of the new one is adaptable to any wiring or other parts you plan to use.

One of the first things you’ll want to do is shut off the power to the light fixture you are working on. Do this by going to your electrical box, usually inside or outside the garage area, and flipping the breaker your light is connected to. While changing fixtures in good lighting makes the process easier, never try to use a light bulb in the fixture you are changing. This is extremely dangerous.

Even if you have your power source turned off, dryness is a safety factor. This means you should make sure that your hands are completely dry, and there is no wetness or moisture in the area where you plan to change or install the fixture. Not only does this make the process safer, it also reduces your risk of the fixture slipping when you are installing it.

You’ll want to work in an organized area that is neat and in order. Do a quick clean-up to make your work area tidy if you have to.  Rugs can slip out from under ladders ver quickly. If you are using an extension ladder make sure all floor rugs are rolled up and set aside. A step ladder is a better choice but make sure you are stable and balanced or just ask someone to hold the ladder for you while you are on it.

Having the right tools handy to change a light fixture will make your job easier and safer. Make sure your tools work properly and that they are clean and dry too.

Changing light fixtures can be easy and fun when you keep these home improvement tips in mind. Ready for more home improvement help?
